At around 822 sq km, Mafia Island Marine Park is the largest marine protected area in the Indian Ocean, sheltering a unique complex of estuarine, mangrove, coral reef and marine channel ecosystems. These include the only natural forest on the island and almost 400 fish species.
Mafia Island and Archipelago is widely acknowledged as one of the best diving spots in Africa. With over 50 types of corals and 400 species of fish, the diversity of animal and plant life is hard to match.
Whale shark season
November and December is the most reliable time for whale sharks sighting at Mafia Island. During peak season whale sharks can be easily seen nearshore.
Reef
At Mafia, you can expect many species of fish, a high diversity of other sea life as well as unbleached coral reefs in excellent condition. Schools of barracuda, rays, turtles and large predatory fish can often be seen on the dive.
